Our friends Erika and Jerry with his daughter Aoife returned to Tonga earlier this month and besides a few other nice places we took them out to newly discovered Blake´s Reef. Apart from the spectacular coral gardens we were spoiled with the visits of a huge school of Great Barracuda (now I know where they got their name from) and around sixty Midnight Snappers seemed to want to guide us on our dive swimming ahead of us for 20 minutes. A Grey Reef Shark came for a close look and the resident gang of Batfish mingled with huge Dogtooth Tuna while a Whitetip Shark was passing by a few meters further down. Simply outstanding! The jackpot, however, went to Brian and Aoife who swam with a 4 meter Manta Ray while snorkeling beside the boat. Sure enough, the camera was down at 30 meters with me, so we´re going to have to wait a little longer for a photo of this surprising guest. We think that the chances are good of this place being a cleaning station for some really big stuff and will return regularly if weather conditions permit it to find out if this could become Ha'apai´s hotspot for diving. In the meantime you can watch our new diving video, a compilation of several dive spots that will hopefully seduce you to try diving in Ha'apai.
